Thinking of you. Lately, I've been meditating on this little bit of Scripture:
Galatians 5:22-23

New International Version (NIV)

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

The thing is, that forbearance part? It can also be translated in some editions as "long-suffering" -- and strangely, it's regarded as a good thing! That's actually the emotion you're feeling == it's forbearance. That's why you feel bad for someone, even if they're a bad person and why on some level, you still care about them and are willing to put up with them even when they're difficult. So after all those years, congratulate yourself on having developed that particular fruit of the spirit -- forbearance. And if you figure out how to capture any of that elusive self-control, could you pass on the wisdom?.

Dan, that's true, it's not in the dictionary the way I put it. It's an explanation one of my college professors used in a class on race in American political life and it always seemed to make sense to me.

Dan, I'm glad the post made an impression on you, thanks! I adopted the tone and structure of my post as a parallel to the Toure post he addressed to young black men in Time. I'm talking to young white men (okay, and maybe all white people too, because I kind of got carried away) because - well, because I have these conversations with my kids a lot and because I have this blog from which I can pontificate.

One of the hard things about taking about race is that targeted messages (white people talking to white people, white people talking to black people, black people talking to white people, black people talking to black people) can be perceived as racist just by calling out specific audiences. I think that merits a separate post.

There is something that has been bugging me about this post every since I read it. Which probably means it's a good a blog. It suddenly struck me today what bothered me so much, outside of my first comment. You make a large number of assumptions about white people just because they are white. You also tell them they have to act a certain way becuase they are white. How is that any different then telling anyone they need to do something because they are ? If you want to address peoples insensitivity towards other people, then do so, but why single out a specific group of people based on the color of there skin to make that point. That's racist.
